A Short Historical Overview

The Szekler ice hockey team Sport Club of Csíkszereda, with mainly home trained, local players, plays simultaneously in the MOL League and in the Romanian Ice Hockey Championship.
The first "ice" association was founded in Csík Region in 1880, the Csíkszeredai Korcsolyázó Egylet (Ice Skating Association of Csíkszereda), registered in 1881. But one had to wait 40 more years until the foundation of the Jégkorong Egyesület (Ice Hockey Association). When in the Csíki Vigadó, before the film screening, there were presented news to the audience, the audience could watch a real ice hockey game for the first time. Lajos Vákár and other young people interested in ice hockey said that "We can do this too!" Starting from this moment, we can talk about ice hockey in Csík.

There is more controversy regarding the first official match. It is still alive the date of 6 January 1929, as the first official match when the team of Csík played against the TCR of Bucharest (Romanian Tennis Club) in Sinaia. (The match was finally won by the TCR of Bucharest at 4-0.) However recent research lead to the conclusion that the 1929 date is not real and the first match against TCR was on 4 January 1931. Three weeks later, on 24 and 25 January 1931, the two teams had another match in Csíkszereda, a few days later - in February 1931 – the Romanian ice hockey national team participated at the World Championships held in Krynica, Poland; only the goalkeeper Dóczy was invited to play in the national team from Csík, so he was the first ice hockey player from Csík who played in the national team.

The team participated at the national championship since 1932, and it had the name Csíkszeredai Sport Club since 1935. After the Second Vienna Award, the team played in the Hungarian championship for the first time. After the world war, the players from Csík participated at the Romanian championship again, and between 1949 and 1963 they won five champion titles under different names - IPEIL, Termés, Akarat. The club had the name Sport Club again in 1972, but the titles were only won after the regime change.

A new chapter began in the ice hockey life of Csík in 2006. In parallel with the Romanian championship the team also participates in the Hungarian championship – although the Sport Club was previously interested in the Pannonian League, too - and beginning with the season 2008/2009 in the newly founded MOL League.

Starting with the season 2010/2011 the Sport Club ice hockey team participated at the championships under the name HSC Csíkszereda and that year it won its first MOL League title as well.
